OBLU SELECT Sangeli has taken the reef restoration efforts at ATMOSPHERE CORE to the next level. In July 2025, the resort signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA), formerly known as the Environmental Protection Agency. It is the key body for protecting biodiversity, tackling pollution, and caring for the Maldives’ natural environment.
The results of the MOU are already in the water. New coral tree frames have been installed in Sangeli’s Muraka Garden, each frame holding 36 coral fragments. These fragments will grow, then be transplanted to restore damaged reefs.
The partnership also links OBLU SELECT Sangeli to the Rasfari Reef Restoration Programme. EERA brings national regulatory authority and conservation expertise, while Sangeli contributes hands-on marine biology knowledge and reef-building skills. Together, they are creating a model of how tourism and environmental responsibility can thrive side by side.
The progress is fast and clear. Coral trees have been levelled for stability, fresh fragments attached, and capacity expanded with new frames. ERA has also provided OBLU SELECT Sangeli with two temperature loggers and a hydrophone. The loggers record changing sea temperatures. The hydrophone, placed at the underwater camera, captures the reef’s daily soundtrack, an acoustic fingerprint of its health and vitality.
And the wave grows, as OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi and OBLU SELECT Lobigili signed a similar MoU with ERA, carrying this wave of restoration across even more of Atmosphere’s islands.
